Finding A Cure

Type I Diabetes is an autoimmune disease that is currently incurable. However, many advances have been made towards this cure but donations are needed to further this research. Two research organizations that I personally support through volunteer work, advocacy, and donations are the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) and the Faustman Lab.

Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF)

The JDRF, of which I volunteer my time in mentoring newly diagnosed teens and adults, as well as strongly participate in volunteer events designed towards educating children with Type I Diabetes and their families about the disease, is an organization leading in the efforts to not only find a cure, but to educate and support families and individuals with the disease. It is a community built upon a strong foundation of people who have been hit close to home with Type I Diabetes, whether they themselves are Type I Diabetics, or a close family member or friend is.

Beyond the research, the JDRF also offers families and individuals support through education and even mentoring, to help them through their tough times. By doing this, individuals, especially young children, learn to grow with their disease and not let it get them down. They are taught that they can still enjoy what life has to offer, whether it be food or play, and they are given the tools of control, so they do not feel as if they are failing.

Many families with newly diagnosed children are unable to afford all of the supplies needed for their children to live a healthy life, such as insulin, glucometers, glucose test strips, insulin pumps, etc, and the JDRF, through donations, is able to offer support to these families. This means that the JDRF needs constant funding and EVERY DOLLAR COUNTS! So please, if you have a couple of dollars you can spare, go donate now.

Faustman Lab

The Faustman Lab has been working for many years on cures for multiple autoimmune diseases, including Type I Diabetes, with the bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccination, which has been used for over 80 years as a vaccination against tuberculosis (TB). The BCG Human Clinical Trial Program is investigating whether the BCG vaccination will treat, or even cure Type I Diabetes by eliminating the pancreas-destroying T cells.

Faustman Lab has successfully completed their Phase I Clinical Trial and are currently preparing for their Phase II Clinical Trial. However, the Faustman Lab needs money before they may start their clinical trials, a total of $25.2 million, of which $14.1 million has been raised. Once again, EVERY DOLLAR COUNTS! So please donate and help them find a cure.
